The blue and pink neon sign of Happy Seasons Chinese Restaurant in Manchester's Chinatown, glowing at night over an open door, with a red Open sign, lit menu boxes and red awnings either side.

Happy Seasons, Chinatown. The neon over the door goes on at dusk and stays on until close, so a restaurant's electricity meter keeps turning long after the last order.

Your bill, read the way we read it.

Five things on an electricity bill decide what you pay and when you can change it. Here's where they sit, on an example bill.

Example bill with made-up figures, not a quote. Bills look different from one supplier to the next, but they all carry these five things.
  1. The S box: your MPAN

The 21 digits in the box marked S identify your supply. The top row describes the meter and how it's read: 00 at the start means half-hourly. The bottom 13 digits are the core, and the first two show your region. 16 is the North West.

  2. Unit rate

What you pay for each kWh, in pence. Day and night meters have two. This is the number most people compare, but it's only half the price.

  3. Standing charge

A set amount for every day you're supplied, used or not. Over a year, 45p a day is £164.25 before you've switched a light on.

  4. Annual consumption

How much your business uses in a year. We price on this figure, so your quote fits your real usage rather than a guess.

  5. End date

The day your fixed price stops. Your renewal window opens before it, and that's when your account manager rings.

How an electricity price is made up.

Two fixed numbers, multiplied by how much you use and how long you're supplied. Taxes go on top. That's the whole bill.

  • Third-party costs are included. The network and industry charges suppliers pass on are already in the prices we show you.
  • VAT and CCL are shown separately. Every supplier adds them, so leaving them out lets you compare like for like.
  • Direct Debit gets the preferential rate. Suppliers price lower when they know they'll be paid on time.
  • Day and night, or half-hourly? We price each rate on the usage your bill shows, so a business that runs at night isn't quoted like one that doesn't.

Example: a year of electricity Made-up figures, not a quote

19,800 kWh×24.50p= £4,851.00

what you use, times the unit rate

365 days×45.00p= £164.25

days supplied, times the standing charge

£5,015.25 a yearplus CCL and VAT

Fixed for the term means both of those prices stay put. Only your usage moves the total.

What we check on your electricity bill

We read the whole bill, not just the total, before we compare a single price.

  • Your MPAN and meter type from the S box: single rate, day and night, or half-hourly.
  • Your annual consumption in kWh, so the price fits what you really use.
  • Your current unit rates including separate day and night rates if you have them.
  • Your standing charge because a low unit rate can hide a high daily charge.
  • Your end date and whether you're already on out-of-contract rates.
  • How you pay since Direct Debit gets the preferential rates.

How switching your electricity works

Your supply, meter and MPAN stay the same. Only the supplier, and the price, changes. You do two things; we do the rest.

  1. Send your latest electricity bill You

All pages, ideally less than 3 months old. A photo on WhatsApp is fine.

  2. We compare fixed prices Us

From our panel of UK suppliers, priced on the annual consumption your bill shows.

  3. Choose a price and sign a Letter of Authority You

It lets us speak to the suppliers for you. That's the last form you'll see.

  4. We send the termination notice and handle the switch Us

Same meter, same supply, new supplier. Renewing with your current supplier needs nothing from you.

  5. We ring before your next renewal Us

Your account manager calls when the renewal window opens, well before the end date.

Questions about business electricity

Not here? Ring 0161 814 9299 and ask. You'll speak to someone in our Manchester office.

What is an MPAN and where do I find it?

MPAN stands for Meter Point Administration Number. It's the 21-digit number in the box marked S on your electricity bill, and it identifies your supply. The bottom row of 13 digits is the core, the part that never changes for that supply point.

What's the difference between the unit rate and the standing charge?

The unit rate is what you pay for each kWh you use, in pence. The standing charge is a set amount in pence for every day you're supplied, whether you use anything or not. On a fixed contract both stay the same for the whole term.

I have day and night rates. Can you still compare?

Yes. Send a bill that shows both readings and we'll price each rate on your real usage. Half-hourly meters can be quoted too: the S box tells us which kind of meter you have.

Do I need a new meter to switch supplier?

Usually not. Changing supplier doesn't normally mean changing the meter. If your premises do need a meter installing, we can arrange that for you.

Are VAT and the Climate Change Levy in the prices you show?

No. We show prices excluding VAT and CCL so you can compare suppliers like for like. Third-party costs are included, and paying by Direct Debit gets you the supplier's preferential rate.

What happens if I miss my end date?

Most suppliers move you onto out-of-contract or rollover rates, which usually cost more. Your account manager rings you when your renewal window opens, so it shouldn't come to that.

Send us your electricity bill. We'll find the MPAN.
