Where the gas goes.

For plenty of Manchester businesses, gas does the heavy work. It's the heat in an old pub, the kitchen behind the bar and the hobs behind a café counter.

The Deansgate, a red brick Victorian pub with green tiles and hanging baskets, on a corner of Deansgate in Manchester with new towers under scaffolding behind it.
The Deansgate, on Deansgate, holding its corner while the towers go up behind it. Rooms with ceilings that high take a lot of heating, and in most old pubs that heat comes from gas.
The Sedge Lynn in Chorlton, Manchester, a JD Wetherspoon pub in a former Temperance Billiard Hall, with a green and cream tiled front, a black and white dome and hanging baskets.
The Sedge Lynn, Chorlton, a pub in a former Temperance Billiard Hall. When a pub serves food all day, the gas goes on the kitchen as well as the heating.
The Foundation Coffee House painted on the window of Sevendale House on Lever Street, in Manchester's Northern Quarter, with warm lamps inside and red brick buildings reflected in the glass.

Your MPRN, and why gas is billed in kWh.

Every gas supply point has a Meter Point Reference Number, or MPRN. It's usually 6 to 10 digits, and it's printed on your gas bill. It's the gas version of the MPAN on an electricity bill: the number that tells a supplier exactly which supply they're pricing.

Your meter measures gas by volume, in cubic metres, or in cubic feet on older imperial meters. Gas is priced by energy, in kWh. So the bill does a conversion, and it's the same sum for every supplier:

From the meter to the bill Example, made-up reading

  1. 1,000 m³

Gas used, from two meter readings. On an imperial meter, cubic feet are converted to cubic metres first.

  2. × 1.02264

The volume correction, for the temperature and pressure the gas is delivered at.

  3. × 39.5

The calorific value: how much energy is in the gas. It changes a little from month to month and is printed on your bill.

  4. ÷ 3.6

    Turns megajoules into kilowatt hours.

  5. 11,221 kWh

What you're billed for, at your unit rate, plus the standing charge for each day.

What goes into a gas price.

A unit rate in pence per kWh, and a standing charge in pence per day. On a fixed contract, both stay the same for the whole term.

Third-party costs are included in every price we show. VAT and CCL are shown separately, so you can compare suppliers like for like.

Direct Debit gets the preferential rate. If you pay another way, we'll tell you what difference it makes.

We price on your annual quantity, the yearly kWh figure for your supply, not a round number. A bakery that fires its ovens at four in the morning is quoted on what it really burns.

What we check on your gas bill

Before we compare a single price, we read the whole bill. These are the things that decide what makes sense for you.

  • Your MPRN so we're pricing the right supply point.
  • Your annual quantity the gas version of annual consumption, in kWh.
  • Your current unit rate in pence per kWh.
  • Your standing charge in pence per day, which matters more for smaller users.
  • Your end date and whether you're already on out-of-contract rates.
  • How you pay since Direct Debit gets the preferential rates.

How switching your gas works

Your pipes, meter and MPRN stay exactly as they are. You do two things; we do the rest.

  1. Send your latest gas bill You

All pages, ideally less than 3 months old. A photo on WhatsApp is fine.

  2. We compare fixed gas prices Us

From our panel of UK suppliers, priced on the annual quantity your bill shows.

  3. Choose a price and sign a Letter of Authority You

It lets us deal with the suppliers for you, including your current one.

  4. We send the termination notice and handle the switch Us

The gas keeps flowing; only the supplier changes. Renewing with your current supplier needs nothing from you.

  5. We ring before your next renewal Us

Your account manager calls when the renewal window opens, well before the end date.

Questions about business gas

What is an MPRN?

MPRN stands for Meter Point Reference Number. It identifies your gas supply point and is usually 6 to 10 digits long. You'll find it on your gas bill, often near the meter readings or labelled as your supply number.

Why is my gas metered in cubic metres but billed in kWh?

The meter measures the volume of gas that passes through it. Your supplier converts that volume into energy, in kWh, using a correction for temperature and pressure and the calorific value of the gas, which is how much energy it holds. Prices are per kWh, so that's what you're billed in.

My meter reads in cubic feet. Does that matter?

No. Older imperial meters read in cubic feet, and the supplier converts the reading to cubic metres before working out the kWh. We price on the kWh figure, so it makes no difference to your quote.

Can you arrange a gas meter installation?

Yes. If your premises need a gas meter installing, we can arrange it, alongside your gas contract.

I'm renewing with my current supplier. Do I need to do anything?

No. If the best price is with the supplier you're already with, we sort the renewal and there's nothing for you to do.

How do I know a call is really from you?

Your account is password protected. Anyone calling you about your energy should be able to quote your password. If they can't, put the phone down and ring us on 0161 814 9299.
